Guest sentiment
A snapshot of what local diners frequently mention about this location.
"This is very much a local breakfast spot. We seemed to be the only foreigners there. There’s a wide range of dishes, including many that are probably unfamiliar to tourists, like popiah, egg crepes, and fish mee hoon. Prices are affordable, and the food quality was decent. Not mind-blowing, but solid and satisfying."
"It was kinda chaotic on a Sunday morning when we arrived for breakfast. It’s foreseen so we did not have any issues but to wait for a table was 15 minutes approximately! However, the food was bomb here! Loved everything especially the prawn noodles, the white curry laksa, the chee cheong fun and the Apom manis! It was just perfect blend of kick and taste! Really enjoyed our time here!"
"New Cathay Cafe is a hawker food court. There were too many to choose from, we tried: Laksa curry mee - creamy white soup (not too thick), yellow noodle, topped with deep fried tofu, pig's blood cubes, crispy pork, cilantro & their special laksa paste. The dimsum: shau mai, corn pao and cheong fan drizzled with sweet hoisin sauce. All so yummy & satisfied our palates. Recommended for an easy breakfast & lunch options."
"Nice hawker food stall, opens in the morniny, suitable for having a local delicacy breakfast complete with its classic coffee shop atmosphere. I tried Java mee and Crispy Popiah here, and of course with a mandatory kopitiam coffee. The java mee tastes fresh, it's served with peanut sauce, which is still light and perfect to be a breakfast. The crispy popiah taste unique, the combination of the crispy batter, soft vegetables, and crunchy peanuts has its unique texture in the mouth, not to mention the nice and surprising mix of the flavour."
"I love dry popiah and not the typical Penang's wet ones and have been looking for dry ones for 10 years and at last I found it. This crispy seaweed popiah is one more notch, it's heavenly yummy. Serious people. You've got to try them. I have it takeaway and added Lingham's garlic chilli sauce once home, it's WOW! Definitely coming back for more."
"Awesome curry mee. Very flavourful. Glad I added roast pork. RM11 for this bowl of goodie."
"I had my first meal at the New Cathay Cafe after I touched down Penang early in the morning. The place was full of people! I personally tried White Curry Noodle and Dry Hakka Pan Mee. White Curry Noodle to me was the best!! The broth was flavourful. Each spoonful of noodles tasted absolutely divine and made me feel so much at home! Hakka Pan Mee was so so to me. Service by the lady was great nonetheless! Shortly after, I was recommended by a kind aunty sitting next to me to try popiah at the "Crispy Popiah" stall. I tried both versions and I love the salad seaweed one! The popiah(s) are crispy and addictive. Definitely a must try! On another note, I was actually hoping to try the Apam as well but it was not open although I came back another day. Hope to try it someday! :)"
"We originally planned to visit another kopitiam, but it was closed — so we ended up here instead and were pleasantly surprised. Almost everything we ordered turned out great, except the wanton mee, which didn’t quite suit our taste."
